From Burning to BluePrint

The Greenwood District in Tulsa, OK –  better known as Black Wall Street – the segregated community that was originally built out of necessity but thrived, has a legacy in American history that has not been fully explored.

From its creation to its ultimate destruction due to the Tulsa Race Riots where the community was bombed by the American government, the true toll of its devastation is still being explored today.

What Black Wall Street has become is a rallying cry and launchpad for black Americans to build their wealth and thrive once again.

From Burning to Blueprint: Rebuilding Black Wall Street After a Century of Silence

From Burning to Blueprint is the upcoming book by Kevin L. Matthews II. It tells the story of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre in the era of the Black Lives Matter movement and social activism. As the title suggests, it is more than a historical account of what happened a century ago, this book provides a path for Black families to rebuild Black Wall Street in the 21st century.

This book builds on decades of research into Tulsa’s Race Massacre and weaves the past and the present together to reveal how the formula used to spark one of the worst race massacres in American history, is still being used today.

Reposted from @the_wealth_warrior 100 years ago, the massacre of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma took place. 5 hotels, 31 restaurants, 8 doctors’ offices, 2 movie theaters, 4 drug stores ,24 grocery stores and 1000+ homes were reduced to ash.

Countless dollars of Black wealth were burned to ash.

I'm grateful for the increased awareness and for the attention that this has gotten today.

Yet, I"m saddened by past, present and potentially future efforts by some to ensure that we are not aware of this as well as other parts of our history.

This includes the countless acts of de jure segregation that have contributed to the racial wealth gap.

Reposted from @legendary_wealthbuilders Passive income is the real flex 💪🏽. Either you're working hard for your money or your money is working hard for you. Although it can be both.

Most times we gotta do what we gotta do and go out there and work 40, 50, 60+ hours a week to get this bag 💰. But we also have to find ways for our money to grow without trading our time.

There are many ways to do this. My preferred method is through investing. A few hours of analyzing and research can get me a month worth of living expenses.

Tell me what you can do with an extra few thousand dollars a month?

I get asked this all the time -- what do I have to do to reach a $100K or $1M portfolio? 💰
My answer is always to be intentional with your money and to make investing a priority. Make sure your hard earned money isn't slipping through the cracks. 🤔
👉Remember, it's NOT about how much you're earning, but what you're actually doing with your money that can make the biggest difference -- it's your choice!
As always, let's build wealth together!⠀⠀⠀

Reposted from @moneyinmatrimony We've all made mistakes as it relates to our finances, some of which we are still paying for today.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If this resonates with you, then it's important that you make a plan to conquer whatever it is that's holding you back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You have to get from underneath the burden that's holding you hostage.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't let a financial mistake you made several years ago keep you from having a solid financial future!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Sell that house that you knew you couldn't afford when you bought it!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Pay off those student loans you borrowed 15 years ago!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Cut up the credit cards that you used to buy things trying to impress people who never even noticed you!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All of these things are burdens to your financial future.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't be ashamed to recognize and take ownership of your past financial mistakes! Your future self will thank you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I hope this empowers you to take some kind of action today!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What past financial decisions are delaying your current financial goals?

Reposted from @parental_wealth I strive to give a view of retirement that isn't always available outside of those considering it.

I mean, think about it at your place of employment: emails will go out inviting those individuals that are "retirement eligible" or considering taking "early retirement" to attend meetings on their retirement options.

Low key, it's almost like a version of the Secret Society of Second Born Royals (yes, I've seen it and even enjoyed it, although there were issues!).

Once our parents reach a certain age, they get invited into a room or meeting where they get to decide their future with a one-hour (maybe two) session discussing their legal rights, obligations, and penalties.

If they are lucky, they know someone who knows someone (that knows somebody), and they receive about another hour or so of insight and personal perspective built on a stranger's experience and situation.

It's essential that our parents make long-term financial decisions independently with insight into how it affects intergenerational wealth. It shouldn't be a thing for them to make lifelong financial decisions in a room with strangers who have no skin in your parents' retirement success.

Kind of like signing up for a credit card to get a free t-shirt should never have been a thing either. Who remembers the results of that gem? 🙋🏾‍♀️

If I knew my parents were going to crack open a 401K early, I would have done everything in my power to warn them about what they were about to deal with (penalties!!!)

That may not have stopped them from still doing it, but it could have better prepared them to pay the penalty by putting money to the side instead of being surprised by a bill from Uncle Sam.

Your parents make the final decision of what to do with their finances, but it's those money conversations with you on how long the money will last that counts.

Your KID Job?
👉🏾Help them consider alternatives.

👉🏾Identify decisions that could trip them up and cause them to lose money.

👉🏾Ask questions about what they want to experience with their family, not only how much they want to leave their family.

Get talking alrea

Repost from @knowmoneysteve

Here's the thing: #financialliteracy *is* important... it's just not the most important thing to help you change your money behavior.

Back in college, I made all the money mistakes you can imagine. I'm talking:

💳 7 maxed out credit cards

🚗 2 repossessions

🏚️ An eviction

🏧 Consistent overdraft fees

🏦 Closed bank accounts

📈 A credit score under 400

And this is all on top of spending money fast with absolutely nothing to show for it.

It wasn’t until I forgave myself for past missteps and unlearned money myths + misinformation that I started to see how to make real change. Before I could start making budgeting, saving, or investing work for me consistently, I had to align my thoughts and words with where I wanted to go.

This is all why now, I'm on the way to the finish line for my certification in Financial Psychology & Behavioral Finance. The new frameworks I've already started using with my clients have brought on some life-changing results. (Don't worry, soon come for you, too).

What's one money myth you hate and had to kick? 🤔
